everything you need to know

A typical day for
your pre-schooler

Every week a different array of toys will be put out to help reinforce key concepts such as colors, shapes, numbers, letters, small motor skills. Imaginative play toys are set out, as well as play dough, markers, paint, blocks, water table, kitchen area, dress ups, cars/trucks and building toys are set out for the child to choose from.  These activities encourage both individual play and cooperative play.

When children can select books of their choice and practice “reading” the pictures.
A set pattern of activities.

  • Using the calendar, practice counting, days of the week, months and seasons.
  • The weather, which leads to many interesting observations from the children.
  • Theme related discussions, prompted by props, pictures, charts (in the case of the 4+ class, letter related discussion).
  • Story time, using books that reflect our theme or letter.
  • Theme related songs and fingerplays.
  • Games to reinforce skills (such as counting, colors, shapes, sequencing, rhyming, opposites) designed around the theme.
The teacher will give you the schedule of your child’s show and tell dates.

Once a week, our music teacher takes each class up to our music room, where they are introduced to musical concepts such as keeping a steady beat, movement with singing, and playing a variety of simple rhythm instruments. These elements help in the development of pre-reading, small and gross motor skills. There is an opportunity to hear and see instruments such as guitar, electric guitar, dulcimer and recorder. The children learn songs that relate to seasons, holidays and classroom themes, as well as story songs and folk tunes

If the weather is nice, we enjoy “playground time” outside on our playground. If the weather is not nice, we go down to the fellowship room for games, exercise, or some other kind of physical activity, working on our large motor skills.

At 11:30 AM for the morning class and 2:45 PM for the afternoon class.

Communication

At the beginning of each year, our parents are given a handbook with our school policies at our “Back to School Night” (If you miss the meeting, we’ll make sure you get one!), as well as handouts which spell out our playground policies, tuition information, emergency school closing policies, our school calendar, etc.

Every month you will receive a newsletter with our themes and activities for the month, along with a class calendar

In our hallway, there is a large bulletin board between the two classrooms, which will also list all our themes, days off, and special activities.

Next to each classroom door is a small memo board which will tell you what each class is doing “TODAY”.

Our teachers are always available for a question or a quick chat at arrival and dismissal times. More extensive conferences are available upon request. At the end of the year, a “Progress” report is given for each child.

Parents Club

We are very fortunate to have a parents group at our school. Every family automatically becomes a member in our Parents Club. Our parents help us to raise funds to finance all of our special events—our parties, our trip fees, birthday pictures for all the children, as well as sponsor “social events” for our parents to get to know each other.

We love to have parents come in as “special visitors” and share their knowledge and experiences with us.

As teachers need “help” during the year, we tap into our willing supply of helpful parents.
